The courthouse
Circuit court matters are heard at the Ozaukee County Courthouse, 1201 S. Spring Street in Port Washington, in the Third Judicial District — the same district as Waukesha and Washington counties. Criminal, family, civil and probate matters all run through the Port Washington courthouse.
Mequon, Cedarburg, Grafton, Thiensville
The county’s municipalities are Port Washington, Mequon, Cedarburg, Grafton, Thiensville, Saukville, Belgium and Fredonia. Mequon shares a long border with Milwaukee County along the Milwaukee River corridor and along Interstate 43, and a considerable share of Ozaukee County traffic and OWI citations issue to drivers who were passing between the two counties rather than living in either. Those matters return to the municipal court of the city or village that issued them, and the municipal courts here are small enough that calendars are infrequent — a citation issued in one month may not be returnable until well into the next.
Why the delay matters
An infrequent municipal calendar is not merely an inconvenience. Wisconsin’s administrative license suspension and the occupational-license application run on statutory clocks that do not pause because a court date is six weeks out. A driver who waits for the court date to start dealing with the license question has usually already lost time that cannot be recovered. That is the most common avoidable error in a small-county OWI matter, and it is entirely avoidable.
